Note by the uploader : There is another 'HEU' - Heretic version of DEU,
based on the same source code, ported to Heretic
by Joost Schuur at /utils/level_edit/heu.zip in
                          the /idgames-ftp-archives.
                          Don't divorce those two 'HEUs'!
I don't know about the differences.

Section [0] 'HEU Information'

    [0a] - Intro.

Welcome to HEU. The only (known) FULLY operating level editor
which supports all the special secotrs, things, and other specific
Heretic operations. HEU was based on the DEU 5.21 code with a few
slight modifications of colors, menus, and other neat stuff.

[0b] - Info About the authors

DEU was twisted and modified by Josh Martel and Tom Mustaine of
MMI and the Other Group. Also the authors of DMM (Doom II Mega
        Menu).
The complete twisting of DEU to HEU, Including all the new objects
and sectors took about a total of 12 Hours. This version (1.0) is
mainly just the basics. Our goal was to get everything working
right and then adding new modifications later. Version (1.1) will
contain a lot of new features, totally changing the way HEU works.

Please, If you find any glitches please feel free to contact us.
Also, if you find any new sectors, lindefs, or objects that we
failed to include, please send that info to us as well so we can
get version (1.1) done up right. We both believe that everything
has been included for Heretic, so there should not be much to
        add or change.

Section [1]

    [1a] - 'The Engine'

The engine for Heretic is basically based on the Doom engine
with a few nice modifications. The texture mapping is improved
slightly, a bit faster. There is no Low Detail or High Deatil
levels in Heretic due to these mapping modifications. Most all
levels that can be created in Heretic will run at the same speed
so the usage of Low/High detail in not necessary.

The one major improvement over the doom engine is the ability to
look up and down. Plus, the ability to Fly around! Both which
adds more realism and greater playibiliy to the whole game.

    [1b] - 'The Game'

Well here it is, the wonderful use of an Inventory! Heretic also
offers the inventory feature, which is a HUGE prelude to the use
of picking up objects for the up and coming QUAKE.

Here are some of the Weapon Descriptions with and without
        powerups.

1 - The Staff - Your Basic 'Out of ammo' Weapon, Without powerup
the staff will get you killed really quick on
some of the higher levels. With powerup, you can
take out Goblins, Golums, Undead Warriors and
                        Ghost Golums with ease.
Ammo For This Weapon : none
Gauntlets - These magical gauntlets deliver a electrical
shock attack. When powered up will drain life from
other enemies and increase your life.
2 - Elvenwand - This is your base weapon, it provides a good
offense for Goblins, Golums, and Undead Warriors
yet, the bigger mosters will laugh at this weapon
unless powered up, then this is a sutible weapon
                        for all situations.
Ammo For This Weapon : Wand Crystal (Small)
                                               Crystal Geode (Big)
3 - Crossbow - This shoots 3 magical arrows at your targets with
great damage for close attacks or hitting many
targets from a distance. Powered up, The crossbow
shoots 5 VERY powerful arrows for heavy attacks.
Ammo For This Weapon : Etheral Arrows (Samll)
                                               Etheral Quiver (Big)
4 - DragonClaw- Similar to the chaingun, this weapon is great
for cleaning out areas with lots of enemies.
Powered up, it deliveres a 4 way 'Ripper' which
                        will tear enemies apart.
Ammo For This Weapon : Claw Orb (Small)
                                               Energy Orb (Big)
5 - Hellstaff - The hellstaff is a rapid and heavy attack weapon.
Powered up, the hellstaff will seek and leave a
shower of hellfire for your enemies to die in!
Ammo For This Weapon : Lesser Runes (Small)
                                               Greater Runes (Big)
6 - PhoenixRod- If flaming death has a vision, this is it. Not
powered up, the rod delivers a rocket type blast
that will knock you back, and hurt if too close!
Powered Up, you've got yourself a nice little
                        Flamethrower.
Ammo For This Weapon : Small Inferno Orb (Small)
                                               Big Inferno Orb (Big)
7 - Fire Mace - This weapon delivers a barrage of loaded spheres
that explode on contact with walls or enemies.
Powered up, The spheres will kill the biggest of
enemies with a small number of hits.
Ammo For This Weapon : Mace Spheres (Small)
                                               Pile of Mace Spheres (Big)

Section 2 - 'Using HEU'

    [2a] - 'Main Menu'

The main menu is almost identical to that of DEU 5.21. There are
A few add on's - nothing that we can go into real detail about.
You just have to check them out yourself. (Lets take level
        editing a little less serious!)

    [2b] - 'Editing'

All The editing functions are the same as they were for DEU 5.21
With the exception of a few new menus in the Sectors and Things.

If you don't have ANY clue on how to use HEU, please look for one
of those LONG drawn out files for DEU which will explain the
basics for editing with DEU and HEU. We assume that those who
are going to use HEU already have a Basic knowledge of editing
        with DEU.

[2b1] - 'Help on the new special sectors'

Ok, as you probabally already know, Heretic has water that
Flows!!! WOW!! Flowing water is a function of about 40 new
sector types which all have a 2 Basic attributes. Ok its
really very basic, a sector will be called
FLOWS EAST/STRONG - This means the water flows to the
                                     East with a strong current.
FLOWS EAST/VVSTRONG/ANIM - This is a east flowing water
a Very Very Strong Current & the
                                       Floor texture animates in that
                                       direction.
Like I said, Piece of cake.

[2b2] - 'Help on the new special Things'

These are really cool! There are new things which
determine what background sounds are heard throught the
level and the intervals of the sounds.

The things Water and Wind are to be placed near secotrs
or things that require sound. Such as a water area or
a long hallway with lots of wind. The closer you get
to these objects the louder they are.

The things that say BCKGRND are to be placed outside of
all sectors. This is so it can be heard throughout the
level. These are sounds that will activate at a random
level, yet the more you put, the more you will hear!

              Also Very easy.

    [2c] - 'Saving'

We Suggest that you save and test often. Testing a level
one section at a time is much quicker and easier than
creating the whole thing and then remembering everything
you want to go back and change!

[2d] - 'Rebuilding your nodes with BSP'

We have also included in this archive a much better nodes
rebuilder than the one HEU provides. The best way to make
use of BSP is this: (1) When you save your level, and HEU
asks you if you want to rebuild the
nodes and such, Press 'n' for No.
                            (2) Quit HEU and Use BSP to rebuild the
nodes. Then your level will be playable

        How to Use BSP:

BSP is very easy to use. Here is the command line parameters.

        BSP <inwadfilename.WAD> <outwadfilename.WAD>

an example of this would be : BSP Test.WAD Test1.WAD
This would use the information saved in the file Test.WAD to
create a playable level for Heretic called Test1.WAD

Thanks to The author of BSP: Colin Reed
Yet another wonderful Doom editing program.

    [2e] - 'Playing your level'

When playing your level, use the cheat codes to run around and
observe your work. The three best are Noclipping (To run to the
various sectors without opening doors or needing keys), Godmode
(So you can stop and check out objects and monster locations) and
All weapons (So you can kill all those monsters in the way of
        your new creation).

Things to look for: Hall of mirrors - This means that you forgot
a texture for a wall. Go back and add a
texture to the wall in question.
Clearances - Check to see that all halls,
doors, steps, and other things are all
                              accessable by the player.

Section 3 - 'Level Bacis for making a GOOD P-wad'

[3a] - 'What the standards Should Be'

Unfortunatally as of yet, there has been no standards set for
good P-Wads. There should be, but I guess its just up to the
        user for now.

    [3b] - 'A good Single player level'

Ok, Heres are some tips on how to make a good single player level:

DO's: - Try to put your start position in a spot where the
first thing you hear is a monster getting ready to
kick your butt. The last thing most people want to
hear at the start of a level is a load of screaming
              monsters.

              - Always include enough ammo and health on a level.
Running out of ammo is a horrible thing to have happen
when there are still tons of monsters left to kill.

              - Make puzzles, But not too complex. If a puzzle can't
be solved easily, most players won't even bother and your
P-wad will be deleted real quicklike.
              - Make good texture/floor/and cieling choices. Nothing
will make someone quit a level quicker than a nasty
              selection of colors and such.

DONT's: -Dont include a huge maze in your level, that just
               sucks.
                - Try not to make everything too dark. Gamma correction
                only does so much.
                - Try not to make every floor on the whole level a
hazard (one that takes your health). That gets REALLY
annoying, having all of your health drained away because
you couldn't find some normal ground.
                - PLEASE don't make these 2 sector levels which have
300 of the worst monsters the game and only 1 texture
choice. That is just a HUGE waste of U/load and D/load
                Time.

    [3c] - 'A good 2 Player Deathmatch Level'

-A good 2 player level is not big!! Thats the first thing.
When there is only 2 people running around trying to kill each
other, you might find each other once the whole game. If you
on a long distance connection. That costs a LOT!
-Another thing for good 2 player levels is to make them non-linear.
This means simply that there are lots of choices for each player
to go, making it hard to corner somebody and easier to run away!
-A nice add on for 2 player deathmatch levels is to make the
Bigger weapons a risk to get. For example, if you want the Hell-
Staff, you might have to expose yourself by running out in the
open, or pushing a button that all the other player will hear and
be able to home in on you quickly. So if you want the big gun, or
the special power up, you have to take a chance of getting blown
        away!

    [3d] - 'A good 2-4 Multiplayer Deathmatch level'

-A good 2-4 player level includes most of the same as the
2 player deathmatch level. With a few exceptions. Try to
make the levels a little bigger, in a small level you will
get killed and beam right back in front of another player
        getting ready to frag ya!
-Also, Make less places to hide. More open Spaces, The harder
it is to hide, the more killing goes on!

[3e] - 'FOR the sake of all mankind, please don't....'

OK, here's the deal, If you make a level and it's Crap, and you
know its crap! Please don't go and give it a snazzy name and
upload it to your nearest local BBS! This is such a waste of
everybodys time!! So PLEASE! if you make Crap, keep it to
yourself, or show your dog or something, just don't waste
        everybody else's time with it.

Section 4 - 'The Future'

[4a] - 'Future versions of HEU'

We have a few new ideas for the next version of HEU.

-The quake extractor might actually work. (Right!)
        -All menus will be redone
        -Colors will be selectable
-Objects can be viewed from the editor as well as the sprite
         viewer.
        -A random level creator
-The create stairs/hidden stairs function will be implemented
-And a bunch other stuff to make it really cool.

    [4b] - 'ULTRAEDIT'

Our next major project is a HUGE one, We call it ULTRAEDIT.
Basically, it does EVERYTHING you ever wanted to do with editing
for DOOM/DOOMII/and HERETIC. Here are some of the cool features
        that will be included.

         - Completely menu driver texture swapping into P-WAD's.
IE - you can create a new texture for D/D2/or Heretic and
port it right into your PWAD.
         - Menu Driven Music Editing. Port over your Favortie MODS
or Adlib files to D/D2/or heretic.
         - Menu Driven Sprite Editing. Create New sprites for a game
and add them to a Pwad with ease.
         - Plus a complete front door program for all 3 games. This
loader will allow for a huge database of WADS/PLAYERS/and
           CONFIGURATION files!
         - Here is a cool example of how this could work. You start
Ultraedit and it asks for your name and password (optional)
Ultraedit then loads all of you personal Presets for All 3
           games, plus the editing software!
         - Plus A LOT MORE!!!

Look for it soon! Now anybody can make their own PWAD's with
         all the bells and whistles!

Section 5 - 'Credits and other stuff'

    [5a] - 'Credits'

DEU - Raphael Quinet & Brendon J Wyber

The autors of DEU have nothing to do with the creation of HEU and
will not support HEU technical questions (we don't think?!?)

BSP - Colin Reed - Author
              Matt Fell - Doom Specs
Raphael Quinet - Nodes and BSP ideas
Dylan Cuthbert - Getting it to the Public

The authors of BSP have nothing to do with the creation of HEU.
leave them alone too if something goes wrong.

HEU - Tom Mustaine & Josh Martel of MMI '94 '95

If you have any problems with HEU, these are the guys to
Bug!! Please if you do have any questions, feel free to
contact, complain, suggest, or any of that to us!

              Josh Martel (NULL) <Null@aol.com>

HERETIC - Id Software & Raven Soft.

Without these rich guys, none of this would be possible

[5b] - 'Be sure to check out DWANGO!'

If you haven't heard of DWANGO, you are really missing out on
the Doom, Heretic experience! This server allows you to call in
and play 2 to 4 player deathmatch with peoplw from all around the
world!! Playing on this is really fun! I just rescently got my
Ass kicked all over the place on level 14 of Doom II by John
        Romero, that was really cool!

To get The DWANGO Software, you should look right in your heretic
directory. DWANGO comes with both hertic shareware and
        registered. Try it.

Also, Look for a new Local DWANGO number to be going up in the
Rocky Mountain area! We are making a small attempt at starting
up a DWANGO franchise. FUN FUN FUN.

    [5c] - 'Anything we forgot'

                                               Josh Martel MMI
