WAD Studio Release Version 1.5b
Copyright (C) 1995 Richard Felker, aka Dalias

IMPORTANT: Read this file. Believe it or not, the information here IS useful.

To use WAD Studio, put the EXE in a directory of your choice.
The HER, HEX, DM2, DM1, DMU, O, and HLP files should be in the directory
specified by WadStudioFilesDir in the INI. The INI should be put in your
Windows directory, and all VBX files in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
You'll also need VBRUN300.DLL, available on almost all CompuServe
forums and Internet sites. Then, run WADSTD.EXE and try to figure
out how to use it. It's not too hard, but write to 71614,3257 if you
need help. And no, you don't even need to have any game to use WAD Studio,
but without it you can't test your levels. :) Oh, by the way, I've added
several other new features to WAD Studio. Look in What's New on the Help
menu for more information. (Unfortunately, this 'what's new' help is not
up to date; I have put more recent info in this file.)

And now, a few notes on new features...
(Read this section for information on how to use the new features.)

= 1.5b = (11/30/95)

A few major Hexen bugs fixed. Very serious bugs!

= 1.5a = (11/27/95)

A few bugs in Hexen support have been fixed. Automatic linking of an ACS
file to a WAD has been added, meaning that you can edit scripts and
run the compiler (ACC) all from within the editor. Manually importing
scripts is still supported, if you prefer it. To link a script to your
WAD, select "Set ACS Source File..." from the Hexen menu, then type the
entire pathname of the ACS file, without any extension (i.e. don't type
.ACS here). Then, two other script-related menu items become available.
Note that node builders will probably remove this source file reference,
so it's a good idea not to build nodes into the copy of the WAD you use for
editing, but rather save the output of the node builder to another file.
This is safer, anyway.

IMPROTANT: For WAD Studio to be able to call the script compiler,
you ***MUST*** set the ACC= line in WADSTD.INI to the entire pathname
of ACC.EXE (the compiler).

= 1.5 = (11/9/95)
Hexen support has been added. You'll need to read the Hexen specs to make
much sense of it, though! I would have waited for Niklata to make a new
help file, but I wanted to release this a soon as the bugs were worked
out! Look for a help file posted separately soon. If you can't figure out
something in the Hexen specs, write to me and I might be able to help.
All of the new Hexen features are either in the individual editing modes
or on the "Hexen" menu. "Import Old WAD" will load a DOOM, DOOM II, or
Heretic level, converting it to the new Hexen format, but it will not
convert textures/things and it will not properly convert linedef specials.
Use an external program (maybe a new DMCONV???) to do this for you. Since
many people have had problems because they didn't know they needed an
external node builder, I have included ZenNode 0.95, the only freeware
node builder that works with Hexen. Read ZENNODE.DOC for more info. I have
also included the Hexen Specs 0.9 (HEXSPC09.ZIP).

= 1.4 =
This version was a beta that I did not release publicly.

= 1.3 =
With several questions about which editors support The Ultimate DOOM,
I just had to add support to WAD Studio. Other updates in version 1.3
include an easy way to find missing textures similar to in DEU, as well
as the Windows Help file and the What's New box. The layout in Search
mode has been improved and new searches are now available.

= 1.2 =
In version 1.2, Heretic support has been improved. Also, a few bugs
associated with multiple game support were fixed. In addition to this,
the error checker in WAD Studio has been given a missing texture search
and a texture name search. One more change is the renaming of VBCTL3D.VBX
to VBCTL3D1.VBX. This change has two purposes. One is to prevent you from
overwriting a much newer version on your HD. The other is that WAD Studio
REQUIRES this version, not a newer version, and will function properly
only with this version.

= 1.1 =
WAD Studio version 1.1 now has a new sector display. If for some reason
you dislike it, it can be disabled in the INI. Also, I have redone the
color scheme, but it too can be changed. I have been wanting to release
a new version for a long time, so no options dialog is available within
the program yet. Still, the minor bug fixes and new features make this
a nearly complete release rather than a beta version. :)

Command line parameters...

/ABOUT Display the about box, then exit. Just for testing.
/DOOM1 Load WAD Studio in DOOM I mode.
/DOOMULT Load WAD Studio in Ultimate Doom mode.
/HERETIC Load WAD Studio in Heretic mode.
/HEXEN Load WAD Studio in Hexen mode.
/GAME <x> Load WAD Studio in game <x> mode, where <x> is:
		1 - DOOM I
		2 - DOOM II
		3 - Heretic
		4 - Ultimate DOOM
		5 - Hexen

A few mouse tips...

In THING, LINEDEF, and SECTOR modes:
- Use the left button to clear all selection and select the object
closest to the pointer.
- Use the right button to select/unselect the closest object.

In THING mode:
- Use the left button to drag things.

In VERTEX mode:
- Use the left button to drag vertexes.
- Use the right button to add/delete vertexes. You CANNOT delete a
vertex used by lines.

In ADD THING mode (+ button in upper right is depressed):
- Use either button to add things. If you use the left button, you
can drag the things before letting up the button. Using the right
button will add added things to the selection.

In ADD LINEDEF mode (+ button in upper right is depressed):
- Drag with the left button to add a line between two vertexes.
- Click the right button WHILE STILL DRAGGING to cancel a line.

In ADD/MODIFY SECTOR mode (Modify button is depressed):
- Use either button to select/unselect sidedefs.
- Use the right button to add/delete the second sidedef.

And yes, the plural of VERTEX can be either VERTEXES *OR* VERTICES, but
I use "VERTEXES" because ID does. :)

Legal Stuff...

WAD Studio is copyrighted, but it is free. If you want to make a
donation for some odd, friendly reason, I'd be happy to accept it! :)
WAD Studio may be freely distributed, but may not be sold for profit.
It may be included in a CD package, but only with my permission. I
am not against the idea of CD distribution, but I would like to know
about CD copies of WAD Studio floating around! Also, I would be more
likely to allow this if I get a free copy of the CD. :)

Thanks to...

Well, I owe thanks to a lot of people, but here are a few:

Matt Fell, for the DOOM Specs.
Ben Morris, for the Hexen Specs.
The GDR team, for a place to start, and for the tick mark code.
Jim F. Flynn, for the LineDefs list.
Ryan Cullins, for all the Heretic info (I don't even have the game).
Niklata, for the Windows help file and Hexen thing info.
ID Software, for making the most completely customizable game ever!
Raven Software, for making the only game more customizable than DOOM II!

Enjoy! Again, write if you need help!
