(available from the Internet at (ftp) i41s20.ira.uka.de pub/SiH95/mln-pm.dms) The new demo from the excellent Melon Dezign (the guys behind the suave platform game "Naughty Ones") combines the legendary stylishness of the group with a rough but fluid style that makes this production one of the best of the year so far. Designed by Nam/Alex/Groo, the team behind the inspired, music-video-like "Mina Omistan," "Planet M" uses clever digitised images and chunky, stylised pictures and backgrounds to make something that's genuinely entertaining. It's not so much the number-crunching power of the effects in the demo, more the way they're put together that impresses, for example the sequence with the Melon logo distorting each individual letter towards the viewer, with strange plasmatic pulses in the background. The music is excellent too, with dreamy, smooth intro music, and some funky robotic speech in the tranced-up main tune. Take a trip to Planet M right now, you won't regret it. The Silents - "Fruitkitchen" (AGA, 2 discs) (available from the Internet at (ftp) i41s20.ira.uka.de pub/Assembly95/a95-sile.lha) This demo from the same group, (although not the same people), who originally brought us the Pinball Illusions games, starts out on a good note, with various half-eaten apples and oranges spelling out the title logo, and a randomly selected dramatic subtitle ("Crossing a Sea of Peaches", and "A Journey into the Banana Incident", to name but two.) On the plus side, there's an excellent "Doom"-style routine, with some nice camera work, so you seem to be shimmying round corners and at one point even somersault 360 degrees. There's also an extremely clever effect involving the glare from streetlights on a vector-road, which really has to be seen rather than described. But the demo misses some of the clever design its predecessor "Soulkitchen" had. Still, "Fruitkitchen" is certainly worth looking at. Fruity. Abyss - "Pixelstorm" (AGA) (available from the Internet at (ftp) i41s20.ira.uka.de pub/Assembly95/a95-pixe.lha) This AGA slideshow from the excellent German group dares to be different, and succeeds in being refreshingly alternative in its choice of the ten great mouse-drawn pictures, by Toxic and Tyshdomos. Demo 'scene' artists often seem obsessed with dragons, semi-nude women, and giant robots (preferably in the same picture), but this release shows caricature (and a little realism) can look just as good when pixeled on the Amiga. Check out Tyshdomos' Michael Jackson caricature for an example of the great, humorous artwork Abyss are capable of putting out.
